Who is driving our chidren?
School bus accidents make you wonder who is driving our children. Today, you see yet another school bus accident. As an author and a mother, I join other parents in the the desire to know who is driving our children.
With this in mind, it begs the next question that speaks to blame. No doubt, you consider the lot; the bus driver, the school administration, the school bus laws as responsible. However, I suggest we do even deeper.
Statistics show an enormous rise in school bus crashes across the nation, and the fatalities of those outside the bus like other vehicles, and pedestrians are even higher. Ouch!
In fact, driving accidents in general, are at an all-time high and it is time you look at the obvious culprits. Since the rise of smartphones, people are glued to their devices while walking, eating, talking, driving, and even during sex. I would argue that this world has gone mad.
Today more than ever, society has become less attentive. When it comes to smartphones, there is nothingsmart about using them while operating automotives. In reality, it is down right dangerous and irresposible.
Whats more, school bus accidents are investigated all of the time. You see seat belt laws put into effect, and like rules on your children. But what about smartphone laws while driving school buses?
Obviously, you are all aware that you are not supposed to talk on a handheld device or text while driving. However, you don’t get ensured that the person driving our children are not using their smartphones.
Withthat said, perhaps it is time to ban smartphones altogether, and enforce stiff penalties when violated, including but not limited to job termination.
Actually, stiffer cellphone penalties for drivers in any motor vehicle is key. Moreover, cars, trucks, and unmindful pedestrians are just as guilty of causing school bus accidents in the past while using a device.
To deemonstate, last year I witnessed a pedestrian with her face glued to her mobile device while crossing the street. As it turned out, the light was green and it resulted in a bus accident where the pedestrian breathed her last breath. If you can imagine, this was not a happy ending for anyone involved. In a word, tragic.
School bus accidents are occurring across the nation and it is time to find out whose driving our children and what additional laws can be put in place for drivers in general.
Just an hour ago, there was breaking news that came across my desk. “Breaking: A school bus has overturned on ramp to Goethals Bridge in Elizabeth, New Jersey.” Events like this, beg the question on when will enough be enough, before our systems take responsibility as humans and realize that motor vehicles have the potential to be a weapon.
In summary, I implore you to wake up to life. That said, be present when you walk and when you drive. Surely, you can save your life and that of our children.
Thanks for speaking out on this subject! Our most precious resource is our children. If we cannot keep their transportation and education safe, then we are failing them in this country..
Yes, Joy Aiello McDonnell. You are welcome. Everyone needs to take responsibility for their actions. Drivers should be vetted, specific policies with still penalties should be put in place, and…we as parents need to be sure our children understand safety requirements and behavior in the bus while in transit. Seat belts, not jumping up and over seats, not distracting the driver. It takes each individual to make conscious choices. When we are present, we have a heightened awareness that allows us to be in flow. 🙂 Thank you for your comment!
